Visual storytelling is an essential component of what it means to be part of the Deaf culture- without it; there would be no culture. As part of this presentation, we will explore a purely visual world through the juxtaposition of film, visual language, Deaf culture and vivid imagery. We will navigate Deaf film history, media stereotypes, visual storytelling, and discuss an ongoing project that functions as a portal, transporting viewers into a world that is often experienced through a visual, Deaf-based perspective. Instead of relying solely on invisible languages encoded in audio wavelengths, we communicate using a formal system of visual and tactile signs; through physical gestures, written languages, facial expressions and body language; through nuances, subtleties and exaggerations. Our thoughts are cinematic in the fullest sense possible. They are animated; they swim through the air. We illustrate stories. We paint with our fingers. Our “motion paintings” define the Deaf experience. An anthology of short stories that identify, magnify and dissect elements of the deaf experience, “101 Things that Unite and Divide” strips Deaf culture of its otherworld-ness by introducing audiences to our motion paintings. For SXSW participants, the Deaf world will no longer be a strange, humming world of flying fingers or visual noise; it will become an accessible, vivid, pulsating world in itself, larger than life.
