The intersection of hip hop and jazz marks a substantial crossover movement that’s currently generating a lot of industry heat. Improvisation in hip hop, such as the role of the DJ and live beat making, has found a kindred spirit with straight ahead jazz. The genres share tactics in composition and in the recording studio. When it comes to live performance, jazz and hip-hop have always taken on the roll of call-and-response, and both genres truly master the importance of audience participation. Hear from noted jazz and hip hop artists and historians on the original mash-up.
