What is the state of digital music? Many rail against the labels for not getting it, but do we even know what "it" is yet? Digital is not replacing physical sales, the new generation of music fans see no reason to pay for music or even music services, the live industry is declining and the best answer we have so far is to sell premium packages to superfans. Is that a viable strategy on which an artists can build a career? Where is the balance between affordable royalty rates for the services and livable royalty earnings for the artists? Are the labels getting more realistic with their licensing terms or are digital music startups an entrepreneurial death wish?
