Pen to Paper - Creating Conceptual Marketing Campaigns
A hands on brainstorming workshop exploring the creative process behind the 'making-of' a marketing campaign. After an introduction into the way AllCity works through the conceptual process and using a hypothetical creative brief, attendees will be invited to brainstorm and develop corresponding marketing concepts for an independent film. Attendees will learn how to interpret a creative brief and choose clear, concise ideas that will translate into a marketing campaign. The ideas will be sketched out during the session and these concepts will then be judged at the end by a Distributor (TBC). The chosen concept will then be brought to life by AllCity and displayed online later the following week.

New Tools for Filmmakers: Virtually Augmented 3.0 Reality
Driven by cloud computing, mobile and semantic technologies, virtual, augmented, and alternate reality, and crazy-sexy-cool search functionalities, web 3.0 is transforming the internet from a network of information to one of knowledge, services and linked data — with immersive digital content touching every aspect of our lives. Why should documentary filmmakers care about augmented and virtual reality? How can character-driven and issue-driven films leverage new creative opportunities in virtual and mobile spaces to achieve measurable impact in the world? Don't be one of those filmmakers who wish the digital revolution never happened, longing for the days of flatbeds and answer prints. At this panel, you will hear about new, interactive 3.0 doc projects from a panel of filmmakers who are considering stories as data points, subjects as avatars, real and virtual environments, 1st and 2nd life, and collaborative filmmaking "in the cloud." This is not your grandmother's once-upon-a-time.

Go Green: Save Green
Filmmakers are increasingly attending to issues related to sustainability and are "greening" their productions. While there is a lot of "green-wash" out there, there are models of sustainable production that cut through myths and uncertainties. Using "The Code of Best Practices in Sustainable Filmmaking" published in 2009 (sustainablefilmmaking.org), we will provide insight and inspiration through actual case studies to show you how going greens not only saves the environment but also saves you money.

Putting It Together: The Film Financing Equation
Film schools and books on film producing rarely explain the delicate balance of elements which are required to launch a film. How do you find the money? Where do you start? What do you do when adversity strikes? Who is there to help you? How can you get them to help? Whether the budget is $2 million or $20 million the basic steps are generally the same.

Alternative Financing For Independent Film
As equity, presales and other traditional forms of financing have dried up, filmmakers have looked for new forms of financing. Properly utilized, crowd funding, corporate sponsorships, fiscal agents, soft money and project related investments can be useful and versatile financing tools for the independent producer. They can be deployed to develop, launch, partially/fully fund, or complete a project. But there are numerous legal pitfalls to navigate. As these sources become more widely used, they will most certainly draw increased legal scrutiny.

We're All Fanmade: Your Band As A Meme
The Internet is no longer a dirty little secret for freaks & geeks, it's everyone's sandbox. If bands want to succeed they have to take it seriously, love it all night AND respect it in the morning. Memes are defined as concepts that spread quickly on the Internet, and creating them requires skill, luck and research. Memes rely on imitable cultural ideas. Memeifying your band involves creating something that’s shared, instead of pushed. How can acts embrace the power of fan media?

Are You Owed International Music Licensing Revenues?
Every day, music is broadcast, played in public and copied in countries across the world, often without the knowledge of its songwriters, performers or rights holders. Globe Trotting on an Indie Budget
Bands are getting offers to play internationally and are faced with a litany of issues that with careful planning, can be dealt with so a tour can be profitable. Do you need a tour manager/sound guy/merch person? How do you obtain visa's or work permits? What is a letter of invitation and who sends it to you? Van hire, train or air travel in country? How much merch should you bring? Is a booking agent vital? By planning carefully, an indie band can make money touring internationally even if their name isn't U2.

Visas are Vital!
With many tours canceled/postponed in 2010 due to immigration issues, we need to address what's going wrong and why. Immigration issues must be dealt with early in tour planning, but only by examining what the issues are and how they have changed, can the savvy manager, booking agent, promoter, record company or independent artist avoid the pitfalls. The combination of technological advances and prevention of terrorism initiatives make this area of touring more complex than ever. This panel will illuminate the situation for those who have had problems, and to those considering embarking on international touring, by examining time scales, costs and potential problems, along with the long term implications of incorrect advice.

Using the UK: A Springboard for International Success
Lay the foundations for global success by building your band in the UK. The UK is a key stepping stone for bands wanting to cross from the USA to Europe and from Europe to the USA - this panel will try and offer road-tested strategies for success tailored to the UK market. Success in the UK can be a fantastic springboard to global recognition - The Killers, Kings of Leon, Scissor Sisters, Fleet Foxes and Vampire Weekend have used the UK as an incubator before going global, could this session help you be next? We'll look at case studies of what previously successful bands have done and how they achieved what they have. We'll try to provide ideas for those looking at taking their band to one of the most fertile and fast-changing musical environments in the world. Topics covered will include: suggestions of key tastemakers not to miss when planning your campaign in the UK (radio stations, blogs, venues, people, magazines and sites to try); Licensing opportunities and choices; do's and don’ts from professionals who've been there and done it; different revenue streams to consider.

And On Piano...Nicky Hopkins
If you read the liner notes of any one of hundreds of classic albums recorded in the 60's, 70's and 80's, there is one name that appears again and again - Nicky Hopkins. Nicky's incredible piano licks graced 14 Rolling Stones records, classic albums and singles by the Beatles, (individually and collectively), the Who, the Kinks, Steve Miller, Joe Cocker and by dozens of other leading artist. He played at Woodstock with the Jefferson Airplane - well, you get the picture! British songwriter, singer, producer and musician Julian Dawson met Nicky Hopkins at SXSW in 1994, wrote and recorded with him that summer and mourned with the rest of the music world, when Nicky died an untimely death, aged only 50 in September of that year. Julian determined to tell the story of Nicky's life with all it's highs and lows. Now 12 years and 130 interviews later comes the American launch of his book 'And On Piano...Nicky Hopkins.'

Searching for Blind Willie Johnson
Blind Willie Johnson lived in obscurity in Texas from 1897 to 1945, yet he eventually became one of the most influential musicians in American history. His slide-guitar playing changed the lives of everyone from Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters to Eric Clapton, Jimmie Page, Ry Cooder, and Jack White. What is it about Johnson and his playing that still entrances and baffles people 66 years after his death? A musician, a playwright, a college professor, and a journalist try to figure it all out. This panel is presented in conjunction with Texas Monthly.

Nashville Now
21st Century Nashville would be almost unrecognizable to the folks who founded fledgling music businesses there in the early 1900's. Alongside current country chart toppers like Lady Antebellum and Taylor Swift, new "royalty" from beyond the expected genre boundaries - artists such as Jack White, Ben Folds, Kings of Leon, Ke$ha, Paramore and, recent transplants, the Black Keys - have all emerged to take their rightful seats in the city's court in 2011. That growing diversity is also reflected in the city's evolving music businesses, from international artist management and booking to App developers and new model innovators. Yet there are sill obstacles and perception problems for the brand of "Music City" to overcome.
