Making Tomorrow Better Than Today is Hard Work
People want the future for their children to be better than the past. We hear about "solutions" for climate change every day, but it often sounds like the future will be dismal. What really are solutions, how do we think about solving the whole problem, what are the actual numbers, how do we keep track of progress, and how do we make the future better than it is today?

The Steroid Culture of Social Media: You Use?
Ever think about taking shortcuts to boost your numbers? You know, the numb that show the success of all those interactive social media marketing programs. The numbers that decide your end of year bonus. The numbers that make you "important" to all those other social media influencers. I know you have. You know you have. But did you use those performance enhancing social media techniques? Humans are naturally drawn to shortcuts. Even when they are already successful. Take Barry Bonds. Not the Barry Bonds you remember with the bulging muscles in San Francisco. The younger, leaner version. The one who was with the Pirates and on his way to the Hall of Fame. Each day he worked hard on the fundamentals of the game. Then, boom, he was on steroids, a caricature of himself and a tarnished legacy. Why? The numbers competition. We all know the equivalent of a Barry Bonds in social media. Someone who is enhancing their performance the wrong way. Maybe it started with a simple list buy of Twitter followers. But then suddenly they were researching blackhat SEO techniques for a temporary boost in traffic. Then one day they wake up in a cold sweat after an all night Astroturfing session. It's time to get help! Join us for a frank discussion on how the steroid culture has infected the social media realm. We will discuss the signs of a social media steroid user, how it hurts us all and a 12-step program to rehab those that have already fallen down the hole.

Avoiding The Bear: Keeping Your Good Company Good
You’ve worked hard for your delicious bits, but the bear is always hungry, and it’s waiting for you to screw up. As a founder, a manager, or individual rockstar, your work is a fragile asset that could be erased with one CHOMP. And yet, success and failure aren’t random. Just like not getting eaten by the bear, your path requires paying attention, planning ahead, careful communication, and having a good backup plan. In this talk we’ll explore the mechanics of making it work while also witnessing some spectacular examples of when the bear got to eat. Ultimately, it’s the near-misses and amazing recoveries that we can learn from when the bear starts sniffing at your door.

How Many Rungs?: Social Change & the Engagement Ladder
When it comes to giving, slacktivism versus “real” engagement is a false dichotomy. Critics need to get used to the idea that we live in a time of innovative new ways for people to get involved – including things that might not have qualified as “volunteering” or “donating” once upon a time. In volunteering, particularly, there are still many questions about how these new forms of online helping actually relate to traditional engagement. Does the ladder of engagement, which seeks to move folks in an orderly fashion from bystanders to committed movement leaders, still make sense in a crowd-sourced, free-agent, sharing-enabled, microvolunteering world? Not only are the rungs becoming blurry, it may be that “ladder” is the wrong metaphor completely. Panel moderator Robert Rosenthal from the popular volunteer network VolunteerMatch (www.volunteermatch.org) will discuss these ideas with four technologists who are also creating innovative tools to engage audiences in social good. How can their tools live beside other innovative, non-technical forms of volunteering -- such as pro bono and skilled models? What are the right business models for social enterprises that are involved in these technologies? Most importantly, how can SXSW audience members make sense of these emerging technologies so their own online social change campaigns can be as engaging as possible?

Let's Hook Up: Brands, Celebs, and Non-profits
Ever wonder how your favorite celebrity became a spokesperson for a national brand? Why your beer of choice is supporting veterans? How your home team chooses the charities that they support? It takes more than a one-night-stand to make these relationships worthwhile. It takes dates, flirting, compromise and commitment. Most importantly, it takes shared goals and vision. We'll show you how Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), a national non-profit, non-partisan group supporting our nation's newest generation of veterans has established a multi-year partnership with Miller High Life, the San Diego Padres, and celebrities that support their mission. Together, they are literally changing lives through a program that will give up to $1 million in experiences to veterans. In a world where everyone is online and new technology, websites and companies are cropping up everyday, brand loyalty is difficult to maintain. It is critical for brands to ally with the organizations and people that support their ideals, and give their audiences a reason to believe their messaging.

Inclusive Design: Creating Beautiful, Usable & Accessible Websites
The concept of the Web for All is something that we hold dear, but sometimes it feels like we are holding on to it for dear life! There is plenty of knowledge sharing about Web Standards and best practices, but too many opinions about what a website really is. If you ask a designer, a developer and a marketer, you will probably get 3 different answers and this can be a tad problematic when you only have one website. So I set out to find a solution, stopped thinking about the medium and started thinking about what the word Design really meant. Things that are designed are invariably products of some sort and it became clear that the internet is a product that people interact with using technology. I reflected on those who inspire me, such as Dieter Rams, whose ten principles of good design are as relevant now on the internet as they were when he first uttered them. And then I looked to Frank Lloyd Wright, the godfather of Inclusive Design in Architecture. With these parallels to hand, it is quite simple. Applying the principles of Inclusive Design to building websites makes sense, but existing technologies and practices in order to ensure its successful implementation is where we are at now. Presenting the principles and how they can be applied to the web, and interspersing these with hands on, practical advice will provide both a breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding.

Cheaper, Better, FASTER: Can Casual Games Save Education?
Since 1990, 33 new countries have been created. Since 1990, my 7th grade history textbook has been revised...twice. Not only are casual games, like Bejeweled and Farmville, the fastest growing segment of the game market, but casual games are also less expensive to develop, easier to distribute, and take less time to get to market. And they can teach. This panel will bring together game developers and game education academics to talk about how the future of education depends on casual games. We will focus on game theory and casual game design, research and evaluation of games and learning, and successful public/private partnerships.

Disconnecting the Dots: How Our Devices are Divisive
We drive cars to the gym to run miles on a treadmill. Inclement weather notwithstanding, why don’t we just run down the street? The activities are disconnected. We sit in close physical proximity with each other and text others far away. The activities are disconnected. Technological mediation creates a disconnection between physical goals and technology’s "help" in easing our workload. There are at least two types of disconnection enveloping our days: one between ourselves and our environment (e.g., pumping water vs. pumping iron) and one between ourselves and each other (e.g., individual distraction vs. global connection) with technology wedged in between in both cases. If our culture is essentially technology-driven, then what kind of culture emerges from such disconnections between our physical goals and our technologically enabled activities?

Secret Revealed: How to be Successful (with Accessibility)
Forget about checklists.* Put away the standards and guidelines.* Focusing on accessibility regulations won't win you many friends or fame. In this session you'll learn what can bring you friends and fame, along with success and satisfaction. Get the secret to making your website and other products work well for older users, people with disabilities, mobile users, and more. (grab those aging baby boomers by their iPhones) If you answer yes to any of these questions, you should come to this session: - Do you believe in accessibility but are having trouble getting your boss/clients to support it? - Do you think accessibility is a waste of your time and effort? Or, at least not something that you want to work on? - Do you want to WOW your current or potential future boss/clients and stand out from the crowd? This session challenges the way most people think about accessibility. We'll turn the tables on the technical aspects and take a good look at the human aspects -- and how to use this to advance your business. We'll provide specific guidance on using new resources to improve your organization's accessibility approach and future outlook. You'll get a clear plan and specific tips on how to conduct a buy-in session that will make your life better. (really, it will make your life better) Come away with a fresh approach to design and development of products that work for people, and make you shine. * (for a while. we'll show you when to come back to them later)

The Untapped iPad Market: Is Your Site POUR?
For the masses, the iPad is the latest, hottest, must-have toy. But, for people with disabilities the iPad is life changing: enabling communication, unlocking minds and fostering independence. However in purchasing these devices lays the challenge: oftentimes websites with product information are inaccessible to this market, which has a discretionary spending power of $175 billion in the United States alone. The session’s goals are to identify some barriers people with disabilities regularly face, making it difficult to participate fully online; explain the four guiding principles of what makes blogs and websites accessible; and offer key questions to begin asking and what resources exist to make sites more accessible to this under tapped market. By giving short vignettes of how people with disabilities are using iPads, faces are put to the size of this disability market - and putting faces to the need for web accessibility. This brings alive the technical requirements and guiding principles of web accessibility.

Nonprofits and Free Agents in A Networked World
This interactive session is based on a key theme in the book, The Networked Nonprofit (http://www.bethkanter.org/the-networked-nonprofit/), co-authored by Beth Kanter. We will explore how nonprofits can unleash the power of social good by transitioning from stand-alone institutions to networks energized by abundant resources in their ecosystem. In order to do this, they need to work with free agents, hyper-connected individuals who are passionate about social change, but don't work within institutional walls. Free agents use social-media channels like Facebook and Twitter and can create social movements in the palms of their hands. They organize supporters, raise attention to important social and political issues, seek donations, and organize supporters to walk, run, shout, protest, and vote, things that were once done mostly by nonprofit organizations. The free agents do it when and how they please, making them distinct from and more powerful than traditional volunteers. But free agents are smashing headfirst into nonprofit fortresses—organizations with high walls and wide moats that work very hard to keep insiders in and outsiders out. Our session will explore how and why this needs to change. Kanter will bring together a group of highly visible free agents working on important social change causes, including those in Middle East, and representatives from different nonprofits for a lively discussion with the audience.

Agvocacy 2.0: Adding a Human Voice to the Farm
You probably don't farm. But you do eat. How do we bridge the communication gap between the 2% of the population who are farmers, and the remaining 98% of people? Technology. The AgChat Foundation is working to end the divide between agricultural producers and the public by training farmers and advocates, developing strategic "agvocacy" campaigns, analyzing data, and funding scholarships. It's all part of helping everyone understand the production of food, fiber, and fuel in its many faces and how technology is changing everything. The panel will consist of various leaders from the AgChat community, most of which are family farmers. Discussion will focus on the AgChat community: how it was built; its unusual diversity, including people, groups and ideologies sometimes otherwise not in agreement; how it grew beyond its basis in Twitter to other social media platforms; some typical discussion topics; and how the AgChat Foundation functions to equip farmers and ranchers with the tools to be credible online voices. Three Undiscovered Companies Leading the Green Movement
The United States consumes more energy than it produces and is the second biggest emitter of CO2 in the world (behind China). If the United States truly chooses to become a greener country, then major improvements in our infrastructure (buildings and transportation) will have to be made. The green movement in the United States has yet to reach a tipping point. Companies either do not know how to lower their energy consumption and carbon footprint, or they are not implementing the projects fast enough. Fortunately, there are signs that we are now more green than ever. This panel will highlight three companies that you probably haven't heard of that are implementing green strategies. You don't want to miss learning about how these innovative companies got started and what they're doing to make our country a greener place to live.

Cleantech: The Interactive Community & the Next Great Industry
Every major forecast from McKinsey to The Gates Foundation points to cleantech as the Next Great Industry. It seems obvious, yet how many of us in the interactive community have deep knowledge and involvement in this sector? Our prediction and hope is that that will change in the next 3-5 years. This session will discuss the current growth of the cleantech sector, its implications for the interactive community and vice versa, the optimal scenarios for impact, and the ways we can start thinking about this industry now. We’ll dive into the current role of data and developers, the importance of mapping & the Internet of Things, and look at case studies from GE & IBM to TerraPower. We’ll also follow up on some of the principles in the SXSW 2010 keynotes of Valerie Casey & Bruce Sterling such as systems thinking in the interactive community, high-impact development, and our role in social & environmental change. Quoting the “Environmental Leader” blog on cleantech: “As our colleague, Harvard Business School professor Clayton Christensen has explained, new industries founded on new technology platforms tend to be complex and expensive at first, as it takes the combined efforts of an organized group of highly skilled people to commercialize a breakthrough.” They’re talking about us, so let’s get involved.

DIY Diplomacy: Designing Collaborative Gov
The Department of State is applying open government principles to move from an information hoarding environment to an information sharing culture. This panel will discuss the behavior change desired and the approach taken, which involves the use of social media, crowdsourcing and reverse mentorship initiatives as a method of culture change. The development of an information sharing culture in the Federal Government cannot be mandated. In an environment where “Need to Know” is the operating mindset, the challenge is changing minds. Projects discussed include: • Virtual Student Foreign Service: Allows students to work with foreign embassies to perform micro-tasking type functions. • Communities@State: an initiative to enable people with common professional needs and interests to form self-managing online communities of practice • Sounding Board: Crowdsourced method to share ideas with a Bureau or the Secretary • Virtual Presence Post: Allows State Department engagement with communities where no physical diplomatic facilities exist. • Civil Society 2.0: Cultivates citizen leaders and NGOs to take ownership of significant world problems. • Diplopedia: Wiki-based online encyclopedia of foreign affairs information written by State Department employees.

Accessibility for the Visually Impaired: Groundbreaking New Technologies
Over the last decade the internet has been an integral part of the African-American, LGBT and Hispanic marketing segment, going from underserved marketing niches to coveted marketing territory. Now we see a new burgeoning marketing group on the internet, the visually impaired. People are living longer, and as we grow older our sight diminishes allowing us to need new technology and standards on the internet. So, what do we do and how do we reach these new internet users? This session will discuss the next steps in providing consistent access to the web for these new users. Michael Cooper, a web accessibility specialist with the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) at the W3C will discuss the initiative and technology that will promote better user experiences for the visually impaired.

Accessibility: The Musical!
People like Stephen Hawkings, Stevie Wonder and Marlee Matlin demonstrate that a full experience of the world does not depend on any one sensory capacity. Our web experiences should not be so dependent either. However, many of today’s brightest minds still consider “accessibility” an issue specific only to people with disabilities. Now is the time to get out of this mode of thinking. In this session, we will discuss why universal design is changing the way people view accessibility. We invite you to hear from our panel of people with disabilities about how they experience music, dance and media through rich internet experiences and events made accessible through the use of assistive technologies. How does someone who is deaf experience a jazz concert? How can someone who is blind experience a movie, play or YouTube video? Join us for this session, and you will be able to experience these first hand! In addition, you will learn new techniques that will allow you and your organization to reach a broader audience by making your own experiences universally enjoyable regardless of devices, sensory capacity, age-related impairments or situational limitations. Accessibility is not a solo-act! This session calls for rethinking the very concept of accessibility. Universal design is a song we can all sing together- will you join us?

How to Create an Internet Phenomenon for Peanuts
In 2006, Larry Smith ditched his fancy magazine editor life to launch SMITH Magazine, an online storytelling community with no business model to speak of. He did it with no plan, no startup money, no staff, not even the proverbial “maxxed out credit cards.” One year later, SMITH Mag had amassed a ton of press, a rabid community of readers of and contributors to the site, and book deals from three major publishers. SMITH Magazine is best known for its Six-Word Memoir project, an international phenomenon and one the hottest storytelling trends of the modern age. So how did the Six-Word Memoir project go from a couple of tweets to four books and 300,000+ submissions to SMITH Magazine and its younger cousin, SMITH Teens so quickly? In this panel, Smith and his co-editor, Rachel Fershleiser, will take you through the steps (and missteps), they've learned in the Six-Word Memoir project, as well as through other online phenoms that share like-minded missions, success stories, and roads to revenue. We’ll showcase examples of unfunded/barely funded projects that began out of passion, and rapidly turned into something sustainable. We’ll go over the core principles vital to success, as well as the questions to ask before you go full throttle with your idea. We’ll talk about we and others have walked the tightrope of protecting our ideas and also allowing for a certain loss of control that ultimately allows projects to grow.

Techies Can Save the World, Why Aren't They?
Techies are plugged in. We're cutting edge. So, why aren't we more green? Why aren't we the ones using our special power to save the world? Are we too busy working on the next hot i-phone app? Do we not care? Are we just avoiding the guilt over our higher than average personal electrical requirements? Maybe the environmental movement just isn’t our battle to fight. Their ‘triple bottom line’ lingo sounds like a foreign language. And it doesn’t sound much like PHP. A kick-ass panel made up of a rare breed of successful environmentally and socially focused tech pioneers provide insights, examples and practical inspiration for techies, bloggers, entrepreneurs and web-business people who are looking to do a world of good. Our expert panel includes founders from major web based businesses, founders of the new generation of successful social and environmental start-up ventures, and major VC’s who are all focused on the triple bottom line – making a bunch of money while doing something positive for the environment and society. A well respected news media editor at the intersection of green and technology will moderate this panel of innovators. Come ask our panel how you can be the change you want to see!

1UP! Games for Change
Me: So you want to save the world, right? You: Totally. What's your plan? Me: We build an app that uses game design to motivate people to do good: conserve energy, change their behavior, etc. You: Perfect. Let's copy Foursquare! Points, badges — people love that shit. Me: Be careful — games can be gimmicky. Points and badges are only a superficial aspect of what makes Foursquare successful. Plus, they quickly tire on you. You: Huh. Me: I'm not talking FarmVille either. It's not about games for the sake of games, but thinking about how to use different game mechanics, how they are right for different audiences, and in different social contexts. Some users want to play for the sake of playing; others like competition; still others like to work together. You: Got an example? Me: I was recently part of a design challenge for reducing paper cup waste. We wanted to get people involved in saving trees without forgoing their morning cup o' joe. But the solution won't be another reusable mug — people forget those all the time. Instead, we tried to change behavior using a game. We'll explain more on the panel but you get the idea. You: So the Drive Less Challenge to encourage alternatives to driving alone is another example? Me: You got it! The goal of this panel is consider a variety of games and game aspects for the design of a common good. And to think about how the user base and social dynamics of the community affect the decision to pick one kind of game over another.
