Your Business + Social Mission = Happiness + Ka-Ching
To expect you to add social purpose to your business just because it’s a good thing to do is foolish. Whether you're an employee or owner, you have a bottom-line and other obligations to meet. But doing good is a business strategy, not merely a moral argument or trend. In this core conversation we'll talk about how your company--no matter its size, focus or budget--can profit from integrating a social mission, how to win support for new initiatives and where to begin. Learn how companies like Linden Labs and Interface used sustainability to differentiate themselves, drive innovation and cut costs.

Can You Trust Me?
It’s no secret that it’s been a tough time for some of the world’s most trusted brands—BP, Google and Facebook are just a few of the companies that have been recent victims of brand erosion. In the digital age, information (truth and hearsay alike) flows like water, opinions spread like wildfire—one day a brand is synonymous with trust for millions of people, the next day it’s being dragged through the digital mud by a few over a product recall or privacy violation. Unfortunately, it’s happening faster and with bigger implications and greater transparency than ever before. Consumers have stopped basing their trust of successful brands on the mere knowledge that they are financially successful—or because they run ads that inspire trustworthiness. In fact, it seems the very definition of “brand trust” is morphing as rapidly as technology is. More often, an increasingly-skeptical public is flocking to the web for real-time information and social network commentary posted by “officials” or by anyone else with an Internet connection and an axe to grind. Paul Parkin, Founding Partner of SALT Branding and expert on brand building, will provide an overview of the ever-evolving “brandscape” and share strategies for building and maintaining brand trust online and offline. He will also discuss how to best redefine and measure brand trust across different generations—Baby Boomers, Gen X and Gen Y—and why consumer collaboration will be key for marketers in the years to come.

Communicating with Everyone: Improving Accessibility of Information Products
This presentation will describe ways to ensure that different types of messages can be received by people with varying abilities. It will review both U.S. and international government regulations, and will point to freely available resources on the web and in print as appropriate. The United States Census Bureau estimates that 19% percent of the population has a disability of one kind or another. For people over age 65, this number leaps to 42%. Legislation (such as Section 508 and the Americans with Disability Act in the U.S., the European Union Charter of Fundamental Rights, and the Disability Discrimination Act in the United Kingdom) has helped to bring these numbers to the attention of both government agencies and commercial providers. It has become increasingly clear that information products need to be accessible to everyone, and that investing in accessibility is not just a government requirement, but that it also makes good financial sense.

Changing the Web Accessibility Game Plan
Web accessibility for people with disabilities has certainly advanced in recent years, yet many believe that the gap between innovation and accessibility is widening. Is it time to rethink our approach to web accessibility? Is the traditional approach of following accessibility principles and guidelines optimal with web content and applications that are increasingly dynamic and rich? How can web accessibility be more mainstream and less stuffy and boring? This panel will investigate the current effectiveness of web accessibility, discuss whether a new game plan is necessary, and present how web accessibility advocates can greatly improve their efforts and enjoyment in making the web a better, more accessible place for everyone.

Make Citizens Social: Digital Participation in Public Services
New technologies have enabled a movement towards a more democratic form of innovation and as a result of this many organisations, including organisations in the public sector have become increasingly interested in creating social media platforms as a means to connect with citizens and target groups. They create platforms for participation and some succeed in getting a lot of attention, however many platforms fail to stay “alive” and are left unused shortly after. What often happens is that organisations fail to acknowledge the fact that the currency on platforms for participation is not money or goods, but people and their engagement. So what is the key to keep these platforms alive? Furthermore; how and to what extent can social media technologies be deployed in the effort to engage citizens and users of public services in the co-creation of novel and improved services? If possible during the conversation we will try to cover several real life and hands on case studies of public organisations in Denmark, which is one of the most digitalised countries in the world. The learnings will be shared through a number of take away advice on how to make participation happen. We can guarantee a lively and engaging conversation about social media and public service innovation seen from a European point of view, which will be of great relevancy to any thinker or doer in the digital landscape. Come join the conversation and share your perspectives!

Hub-and-Spoke Systems for Open Museum Technology
Hub-and-Spoke Systems for Open Museum Technology will focus on how museums, science and technology centers, and the like-minded community can benefit from an active model designed to promote collaboration, information exchange, and the adoption of open-source applications and technologies. That model is MOSCAR (Museum Open-Source Code and Application Repository), an initiative spearheaded at Liberty Science Center. The presentation will be divided into two sections: the first will explain the disconnect between the stature of museums and their implementation of emerging and socially relevant technologies; the second will focus on devising models for engaging target communities, with our particular instance (which leverages two collaborative platforms: github and forrst) as a demonstration of this multifaceted learning process. We will present relevant examples stemming from this project, which showcase how users can take advantage of its resources: code, applications, tutorials. The presentation will conclude with a call to action, imploring the audience to use and/or contribute to this and other similar endeavors, regardless of technical proficiency or background. Part thesis, part demonstration, and part community discussion, this presentation will contextualize the dearth of museum resources and offer an outlet for reusable, fully distributable content and a support network for conversation and, ultimately, better work.

Design Intersection - Cultural Sustainability and Civic Engagement
Our focus is the designers’ role in combining cultural sustainability and civic engagement to find creative solutions to some of the world’s toughest problems. Innovative strategies, systems thinking, distributed production, open design and creative risk-taking are yielding meaningful outcomes regarding climate protection, clean mobility, renewable energy, waste reduction, and social equality. Effective utilization of social media, web based maps and the internet have made much of the world dependent on mobile communication devices, which need a constant supply of power to keep roaming. Balancing their impact, new tools such as the Kill-a-watt, energy monitor mobile apps and solar charging stations visually link users with their home/work energy consumption. Others, such as Green Map, livingprinciples.org or Treehugger, put an environmental and social perspective on local resources and developments, motivating action that benefits the commons. Designers and social entrepreneurs are forming strong communities of practice and collective identity as desire shifts toward sufficiency and well-being. Entities willing to take a creative risk and a leadership role in adopting holistic design processes are becoming the leaders of our future development. Providing tools for educators to restructure the pedagogy is essential for preparing future creators to face the challenges with sanguine, innovative solutions. Join with us on a journey towards redesigning design.

Remote Work Changes the World - Ayesha’s POV
Pakistan is not usually associated with remote work. Neither is Kenya or Belarus. However, using the web and remote work platforms, the enterprising and web-savvy citizens of these countries are overcoming tremendous obstacles to claim their rightful place in a borderless, global economy. Pakistan makes headlines as a place of political inconstancy and severe economical instability. Like many parts of the world, the Pakistani unemployment rate is the highest the country has ever seen (at 13.6%), and many highly-qualified people find themselves jobless. In this environment, remote work is a great source of opportunity for the Pakistani community to earn its livelihood, and the world to find a new well of talented, hard-working professionals in the process. But remote work here isn’t without challenges -- language barriers, a nationwide major power crisis, and much more threaten the possibilities for remote workers in Pakistan, and countries like it. How do workers facing these issues provide quality work on time to global clients? Based on the story of Ayesha, a female software engineer in Pakistan, we will consider the ways remote work is changing the world, and your business. Please join us to discuss the obstacles facing remote workers and employers, how to redefine what it means to “work”, and the new opportunities available to workers worldwide in this borderless economy.
