Javier Garza is Editorial Director of El Siglo de Torreón in Torreón, Mexico, a city caught in the crossfire in the war against Mexican drug cartels. He graduated from the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City and has an M.A. in Journalism from the University of Texas at Austin. His carrer in journalism began at the newspaper Reforma in Mexico City, as a reporter and editor in the National section, covering politics and government. He also helped start the paper’s news service (Agencia Reforma), the first web-based news service in Latin America. He was Washington correspondent for Monitor, a newspaper and radio group in Mexico City, and deputy editor of Rumbo de Austin, a Spanish language newspaper. Since 2006 he has been Editorial Director of El Siglo de Torreón, one of the largest circulation dailies in Northern Mexico. As the wave of violence has hit the city of Torreón, El Siglo has been subject of threats and attacks. During the past year he has lectured on violence against the media at the University of Texas at Austin, the University of California-Berkeley, the University of Georgia and the Interamerican Press Association.
