Rene Perez

Calle 13
RENE ”RESIDENTE” PEREZ, is the highly outspoken lyricist and MC of Multiple GRAMMY and Ten-Time LATIN GRAMMY winning Puerto Rican duo CALLE 13. NPR has championed Calle 13 as “the most exciting and creative group to hit the Latin music scene in the last decade… much more than a band of musicians: They are poets, comedians, journalists, satirists and political activists.” Residente himself was recently hailed by Slate as “a rapper as musically daring as Kanye West; as funny as Lil Wayne; and as politically engaged as M.I.A”, while The New York Times simply said “René Pérez might well be the most iconoclastic character in hip-hop — if not all of pop.” A voice of political conscience for young Latinos the world over, Residente /Calle 13 was one of the very first artists to take up Zack de la Rocha’s call-to-arms and lend their support to the efforts of The Sound Strike.
