Tricia Wang is a sociologist, technology researcher, and ethnographer who studies how people use digital communication technologies throughout the world; her most recent work is based in China and Mexico. She is passionate about explaining how cultural orientations influence technology use, regulation, and design. Her research also covers the changing uses of information, digital geo-political developments around technologies between corporations, states, and local users, and the impact of large-scale technology diffusion on urban life. She received a NSF grant to be the first invited visiting scholar from the US to research at The Chinese Internet Network Information Center (equivalent to US's FCC) in Beijing, China. Prior to her academic turn, she was a hip-hop education advocate, youth media strategist, and community organizer. She's a Fulbright Fellow and a National Science Foundation Scholar. She is moving to China to do research on how new rural to urban migrants are using computers and cellphones. She will be live-blogging from her fieldsite in China www.BytesofChina.com.
